Lights Out Birmingham

Well I know that we'd have got on fine in primary school
Because I've seen you laugh to yourself on the bus too
And based upon this image of a little you and me
When we'd play we'd play in the trees
But what would we see from the tops of those trees?
Because wouldn't it be nice if just for one single night
We could look up and see
Stars in the skies above us
Wouldn't it be nice if just for one single night
We could look up and see
Stars above the tower blocks in this town
You see the city skies above us are no place to look
You can make out Orion's Belt but only with luck
And it seems such a shame that after the light's travelled all this way
That in the last millisecond Birmingham gets in the way
And living here is like twenty four hour day
Because wouldn't it be nice if just for one single night
We could look up and see
Stars in the skies above us
Wouldn't it be nice if just for one single night
We could look up and see
Stars above the tower blocks in this town
So lights out Birmingham!

Compilations of Sweden

The streets of Brum were not designed for one so sensitive and in the last year I knew him he had become recluse
And the times that we would swap compilation tapes were just plain annoying as he would slag off all the bands I love
At around that time we stopped going to Snobs for "it's the indie Broad Street", "it's gone downhill", at least we both agreed on that
And nights in The Jug would consist of deciding where the band that we weren't in would stand on stage
One day we discovered Suburban Kids With Biblical Names
I thought they were good, not great, but that was the day that his life would change
The Stockholm music scene was lovingly purchased piece by piece
Shipped over here, and then rebuilt inside his bedroom
Because he'd decided that Sweden was where pop comes from
And he decided that Sweden was where he belonged
It didn't take long for him to decide he's leaving
"Dunc, I've had enough, I don't see where this band is going
I'm going to go and take these compilation tapes to Sweden
And give them out to all the bands who changed me"
How could I not let him, I would have jumped myself at half the chance
But I could have not predicted how long this Swedish trip would last
He cut off all his ties in Brum and sold his records for a decent price
The only time he showed remorse was when he left to get his flight
I wish I could tell you what happened to him next
The only thing that I heard was a postcard soon after he left
But I hope he's happy now or at least somewhere down that path
Because I've missed our tape swaps and I wish I'd kept his address
Because I've decided that Sweden is where pop comes from
And I've decided that Sweden is where I belong
